 Creighton Aloe Steam Train

You may be thinking where is Creighton….well you very right, it's a small town South of Durban. Aloe season is around June/July and we were lucky enough to catch the last train of the season to check out the flowering of the Aloes.

Get up and get onto the road as soon as you can so that you arrive at the station with time to grab a bacon and egg roll and a cup of hot coffee. Then you board the train, depending on what ticket you bought you are allocated a coach, there is an “A” class coach, then a middle class and I guess a lower class. Once we got started the views were spectacular, we passed beautiful landscapes, clean clear rivers and then we got to see the Aloe’s who didn’t disappoint they were vibrant in colour by the thousands along the rolling hills.

We enjoyed a sherry whilst catching up with friends and family, and we had a helpful gentleman who gave me useful information about where we were and what rivers we were passing, and finally what town we were stopping at.

I think the highlight for me was when the train stopped and everyone jumped off, the train then backed up and we had an opportunity to stand alongside the railway as the train raced by leaving us with the trembling ground underneath our feet, the sound of the engines ringing through our ears and the feel of the soot on our faces and through our hair, what a feeling!!!!

This is a great day out for the family and kids if you don’t mind the drive.

Langebaan lagoon

Bird-watchers visit the area to view the over 300 species of birds found in the lagoon waters of the West Coast National Park. The park is most busy during the spring flower season (August to September) when the wildflowers are in bloom. Whales can be spotted during October and November.

The white sand beaches surrounding the clear waters of the Langebaan Lagoon are one of the main attractions of Langebaan. The mild climate and protected waters of the lagoon make Langebaan popular for sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing and fishing, and the town offers numerous holiday facilities for water sports enthusiasts.

To protect its culture as a fishing, holiday and retirement village, the town allows no industries.

Hole in the Wall

The Hole-in-the-Wall is an extraordinary natural arch. The formation consists of a tidal island containing a natural arch that takes the form of a hole pierced through a wall of sandstone and shale by the waves of the sea located at the mouth of the Mpako River, about 8 km due south of Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast Region, Eastern Cape in South Africa.

The natural arch is large enough for a sailboat to cross underneath it with ease. It is reachable by foot just off the beach joining the rock formation to the land at low tide.
